Dear Resident:

The Community REC Center will close until further notice, effective March 16, 2020 at 9:00pm.

This decision is based on recommendations released today by state and federal agencies. The Community REC Center facilities (including walking track) will be closed to the public which involves all programs, classes, birthday parties, activities and events. The front office operations will remain open from 8:00am to 4:00pm to support essential city services.

We will continue to monitor recommendations from state and federal health sites so that we may safely provide services and will keep you updated with any additional changes.

Thank you for working with us to keep our community and the Community REC Center safe for all.

Marinette Municipal Court Session Scheduled for March 19th has been rescheduled due to COVID-19

In an effort to keep our community safe while we navigate the COVID-19

Pandemic, Marinette Municipal Court has decided to reschedule all Initial Appearances originally scheduled for March, April, May and June of 2020. Therefore,

MARINETTE MUNICIPAL COURT SESSION SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 19, 2020 HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO JULY 9, 2020 AT 10:00 AM OR 1:00 PM (your choice).

Most traffic citations do not require a mandatory appearance and are expected to be paid prior to your court date.  Payments can be made as follows:

Voters Encouraged to Vote Absentee for April 7 Election

[CITY OF MARINETTE] – Because of the COVID-19, voters in Marinette are strongly urged to act now to vote absentee for the April 7 Spring Election and Presidential Preference Primary.

“Polls will be open in the City of Marinette for those who need them on Election Day, but most voters should vote absentee for this election,” said Lana Bero.  “For that to happen, you should request an absentee ballot as soon as possible.”
 
Acting by Wednesday, March 18, is especially important for anyone who needs to register to vote by mail, Clerk Bero said. If your name or address has changed since the last election, you need to register with your current information.  You can check your registration status at https://myvote.wi.gov, click on “My Voter Info.”

If you know you are registered but cannot find yourself on the website, you should contact your clerk or Wisconsin Elections Commission. There is possibly a typo in the spelling of your name or your date of birth.  Voters who cannot find themselves on MyVote should call their municipal clerk’s office at 715-732-5141 or call the Wisconsin Elections Commission at 866-VOTE-WIS (866-868-3947) or 608-261-8005.

How to Register to Vote by the Deadline

Wednesday, March 18 is the deadline for electors to register to vote by mail or online for the Presidential Preference Primary and Spring Election. After this date, electors must register in person in the municipal clerk's office or at the polling place on Election Day.

According to state law, mailed voter registration forms must be postmarked no later than the third Wednesday before the election. Online registration closes at 11:59 p.m. the same day.

Online voter registration is available at https://myvote.wi.gov. There are two ways you can register using the website:

·         People with a Wisconsin driver license or state ID card whose address is current with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation can complete their online registration immediately. People who need to update their address with DOT can accomplish that online and complete their online registration.

·         People without a Wisconsin driver license or state ID card can fill out the voter registration form online, then print it, sign it and mail it to their municipal clerk’s office along with a proof-of residence document. The website has detailed instructions. If you do not have a printer where you are, you can save the completed form as a PDF and make arrangements to have a family member or a friend with a printer, or a copy center, to print it for you.

Blank voter registration forms and Absentee Ballots are also available at the clerk’s office, 1905 Hall Ave.  Starting Monday March 16^th 7:30-4:00PM, Monday –Friday, Tuesday & Wednesday April 1^st and 2^nd the clerk’s office will have extended hours until 6:00PM.  On Friday April 3^rd we will be open until 5:00PM for Absentee voting.

Remember, the deadline to register online or by mail is Wednesday, March 18.

Voters who miss the deadline may also register in their municipal clerk’s office until the Friday before the election, April 3 or at the polls on election day.

How to Request an Absentee Ballot

There are several ways registered voters can request absentee ballots. If they have internet access, the easiest way is to sign up at MyVote Wisconsin, https://myvote.wi.gov.

Just look for the “Vote Absentee” button near the top of the page. On a mobile phone, use the menu button in the upper right corner of the website. There is a three-step process that starts with putting in your name and date of birth, followed by requesting your ballot. If you don’t already have a photo ID on file with your clerk’s office, you can upload a copy. Mobile phone users can take a picture and upload it to MyVote. Absentee ballot requests submitted this way go directly to your clerk’s office, and you can track your ballot by returning to the website.

Voters can also request absentee ballots by mailing, emailing or faxing their municipal clerk’s office. You can find your clerk’s contact information on MyVote Wisconsin. These requests must be accompanied by a copy of your photo ID.   If you already have a photo ID on file from previous absentee requests under your current registration, you will not need to provide it again.

Voters who are indefinitely confined, meaning they may have difficulty getting to the polls for reason of age, illness, infirmity, or disability are not required to provide a photo ID.  Voters in care facilities can have a representative of the facility confirm the resident's identity instead of providing a photo ID.  More information on photo ID and exemptions can be found at bringit.wi.gov. 

The deadline for registered voters to request an absentee ballot be mailed to you is the Thursday before the election, April 2. However, Lana Bero urges voters not to wait, due to possible delays in mail delivery.  If you get an absentee ballot mailed to you, you can still decide to vote at the polls on Election Day if you haven’t returned it.

Your absentee ballot must be received in your clerk’s office or at your polling place by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Again, Lana Bero urges voters to request and return ballots as soon as possible.

City of Marinette Voting Options 2020 Spring Election & Presidential Preference

Hello voters!  Did you know you have options to cast your ballot for the April 7, 2020 election (and every election). 

For the traditional voter who enjoys the excitement of Election Day, polls will be open from 7:00 am  Our election workers will be happy to assist you along with keeping the election facility as clean and safe as possible.  Extra efforts will be taken to continually wipe down voting booths and election equipment throughout the day.  For voter’s convenience, hand sanitizer and tissues will also be available at each station.

Not up for Election Day?  Request an absentee ballot online at www.myvote.wi.gov prior to April 2nd, and a ballot will be mailed to you.  Voters may also request a mailed ballot in writing to the City Clerk but be sure to include a copy of your photo ID with your request.  This works great for travelers; those who have a suppressed immune system; or voters who just can’t make it to the Community REC Center during working hours. Please be sure to allow mailing time so the ballot is returned on or before Election Day.

Lines may be long on Election Day so be prepared and make sure you are already registered, even if you moved to a different address in the City of Marinette you still need to register at that address and show proof of residency.

Voters can also vote in-person via absentee ballot at City Hall prior to election day during regular office hours.  In-person voting ends on Friday, April 3^rd at 5:00 pm so plan ahead.

$29 Million Harbor Grant to Port of Marinette in Support of Future Ship Building

Gov. Evers Announces $29 Million Harbor Grant to Port of Marinette in Support of Future Ship Building

MADISON—Gov. Tony Evers today announced a $29 million Harbor Assistance Program grant for improvements needed at the Port of Marinette to allow for the production of the next generation of navy ships. Fincantieri Marinette Marine, a premiere shipbuilder located at the port, intends to continue a site improvement project. That project includes the construction of a vertical ship lift structure, dock walls and bulkheads and harbor dredging to transition the shipyard to accommodate the construction of larger vessels. “These shipyard improvements ensure that Marinette Marine can continue to compete for U.S. Naval contracts, providing the area with good-paying, family-supporting jobs. Their success is vital to the success of the Marinette community and local economy,” Gov. Evers said.  “The ripple effect of this grant will be felt statewide,” said Craig Thompson, Wisconsin Department of Transportation secretary-designee. “Wisconsin’s ports are major economic hubs generating thousands of jobs.” Jobs at the Marinette Marine shipyard include 1,500 full-time employees and contractors. Another 1000 suppliers and customers, many with offices right at the shipyard, are on site every day. Fincantieri Marinette Marine focuses on naval construction, including combat ships, icebreakers, buoy tenders, and research vessels. It is one of the international shipbuilder’s three US facilities, all of which are located in Wisconsin. The indoor production capacity of the Marinette shipyard is 556,000 square feet, the equivalent of approximately 10 football fields. Created in 1979, WisDOT’s Harbor Assistance Program helps harbor communities maintain and improve waterborne commerce. Applications are reviewed by the Harbor Advisory Council, which includes members from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, UW Sea Grant, Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and alumni from the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute.

Voting Reminders for the City of Marinette April 7th, 2020 Spring Election & Presidential Preference Vote:

City of Marinette, WI –The Tuesday April 7th, 2020 Spring Presidential Preference Election and all further 2020 Elections in the City of Marinette offers voters one convenient location where all voters cast their ballot at one citywide location, Marinette Community REC Facility., 2501 Pierce Ave, and that site opens at 7:00 AM and remains open until 8:00 PM. The Spring Election.

 The number one thing voters should know is where to vote and whether they’re currently registered. Wisconsin voters can find the most accurate information about voting at https://myvote.wi.gov/ including where their polling place is and whether their registration is current. If you’re not sure, take a few minutes to visit the My Vote Wisconsin website: It could save you time and headaches on Election Day. 

My Vote Wisconsin also has sample ballots so voters can familiarize themselves with their choices before they arrive in the voting booth. People who do not have internet access can check their status with their municipal clerk’s office. Voters also are offered the opportunity to download the absentee ballot request form on the https://myvote.wi.gov web site. 

Voters can also cast an absentee ballot at the City of Marinette Clerk’s Office, 1905 Hall Ave., Marinette WI, Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM with the first day to cast an absentee ballot beginning Monday March 23, 2020. The deadline for voting an absentee ballot in the Clerk’s Office is 5:00 P.M. on Friday April 3rd, 2020.

To register on Election Day, Wisconsin voters must provide a proof of residence document and a photo ID but be aware the lines will be long so it is best to register before the election either on- line or at the City Clerk’s Office. Proof of Residency can be a driver license or state ID card with the voter’s current address. It can also be a current utility bill, lease, University ID card or other official document showing the voter’s name and current address.  For a list of acceptable documents, visit the W.E.C. website at http://elections.wi.gov. You must be a resident of your ward for 10 consecutive days to register.

The Marinette Police Department is releasing the following information pursuant to Wisconsin State Statute 301.46(2m) which authorizes law enforcement agencies to inform the public of a sex offender’s release/residence when, in the discretion of the agency, the release of information will enhance public safety, awareness and protection. The individual who appears on this notification has been convicted of a sex offense.

This sex offender has served the sentence imposed on him by the courts. He is NOT wanted by the police at this time. This notification is not intended to increase fear; rather, it is our belief that an informed public is a safer public.

Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but it was not until the Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Law was enacted that law enforcement was able to share this information with the community. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will NOT be tolerated.

Gregory E.
